the plot

This is the first book about angels that I’ve read in… who knows how long, so it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting. The Hunted One has a unique perspective on angels and Heaven, and their connections with Earth, Hell, and the humans. The angels, instead of being perfectly pure and loyal, are turned into the ‘bad guys’ and Michaela, the general of Heaven, has been betrayed by them. Similarly, the people who are typically not the heroes, such as the Nephilim and humans such as Clark, are the only ones on her side. I loved how everything about The Hunted One is different than what you’d expect.

Plus, there’s tons of action, suspense, (a little) mystery, and even some romance in this book, though the communication between characters was a little infuriating, but more on that later.

the imagery

I don’t really ever comment on literary devices, but with this book, I have to. The imagery was SO beautiful, especially in the opening scene. In most books, extensive description is very annoying, because it can make you feel like the story is slow going and, personally, I’d get bored, but Meg paints pictures at the perfect time, creating a vivid scene in your mind, that actually doesn’t make cry of boredom. I think it’s because the descriptions are less description-y and more… flowing? Like someone’s speaking rather than listing off how something looks? I’m not sure if I’m explaining that well, but, point is, I adored the writing in this book!

the characters

Michaela wasn’t an easy character like at first, but I think that’s a good thing, because it further exaggerates the fact that she’s an angel with nonhuman qualities, but also because as she changes and develops, you grow to like her more. However, Clark is one of those characters you instantly like and become attached to. Though, at the beginning, I pictured him as older than he was, which I seem to do alot, so it’s probably has nothing to do with the book.

I sort of thought Clark and Michaela might become more than friends at times, which including Gabriel, would have turned into a love triangle, but thankfully that didn’t happen. It would have further complicated Michaela and Gabriel’s already tough relationship.

I did have ONE big problem with this book (which is why I gave it four stars instead of five) which was how their was so much miscommunication between all the characters. It seemed like the driving force behind all the conflict was miscommunication, which isn’t a huge problem, it works, but it annoyed me so much.

overall

I’d recommend this book for anyone who loves fantasy, angels, and paranormal. I found some parts annoying (the miscommunication) but for the most part I enjoyed this book, and the writing is BEAUTIFUL!
