Top 5 Books I Would Rate Differently Today

I’ve noticed that I mostly rate books with 3 or 4 stars. I don’t know why. Maybe I’m both difficult to extremely disappoint and impress when it comes to books, so I just typically dump all books into the 3 or 4 star category. Who knows? Anyway, noticing that made me think about what books I would rate differently now, or if I had read them today.

So without further ado, here are 5 books I would rate differently:

1. Insurgent (Divergent #2) by Veronica Roth

Original Rating★★★★★

New Rating★★★

Explanation: I don’t remember anything about this book except for the WILD twist at the end. I think I mostly based my original rating on how much I liked the movie (and the cast). Anyways, this series doesn’t appeal to me nearly as much now as it used to.

2. Random by Tom Leveen

Original Rating★★★★★

New Rating★★

Explanation: I don’t remember anything about this book AT ALL. This book left no imprint on me in the long run, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone because I don’t remember how it made me feel, what I liked, etc. This could be a factor of my own lack of memory, but it could also be that this book just wasn’t that special for me.

3. The Truth About Alice by Jennifer Mathieu

Original Rating★★★★★

New Rating★★★

Explanation: I didn’t like the characters very much. This book didn’t really stick with me after I finished it. Although it did have a message about rumors and bullying that makes it worthwhile.

4. The Host by Stephenie Meyer

Original Rating★★★★★

New Rating

Explanation: The romance is what appealed to me originally. Basically, the plot of this book was the same as Twilight, except with aliens instead of vampires. But the aliens had an interesting uniqueness to them that was fun. The movie was somehow even worse than the book.

5. Keeping the Moon by Sarah Dessen

Original Rating★★★★

New Rating★★★★★

Explanation: I still think about this book sometimes, even years after reading it. If I re-read books, this would absolutely make my list. TBH, I can’t go wrong with Sarah Dessen. I think I underappreciated the themes in this book when I originally rated it, but thinking back on it, those themes really stuck with me long-term.

What books would you rate differently now? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

  1. I love this! I’ve changed a few ratings over the years myself, books I initially loved but then when I re-read them years later I was left confused at my ratings. I have only read Insurgent and rated it with 2 stars the first time, and I haven’t read the Host but I’ve seen the movie and yeah I have to agree, it’s basically Twilight but watered down.

    1. Thank you! I feel like most of my very low ratings are the only ones that usually don’t change over time for me, but yeah I’m also baffled at how I rated some books thinking back on them. Thanks for commenting! 🙂
