WOW. OKAY. THIS BOOK IS MAKING ME WANT TO SCREAM. In mostly good ways (and some frustrating ways).
What if this book is so funny, with witty dialogue and hilarious narration, that I kept CACKLING in quiet, public spaces, like at work or on car rides so people start to stare? What if I kept laughing so much while reading with my boyfriend that at one point, I said to him, “You wish you had this much fun while reading, don’t you?” Well…
What If It’s Us is the cutest book you will ever read. I’ve probably said this before and I’ll probably say it again about other books, but I mean it. The cuteness will 1,000% overwhelm you.
Seriously, Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera are so very talented at writing hilarious, heartwarming characters and relationships, I truly can’t handle it. I became quickly attached to Arthur and Ben and all of their friends. I know I am going to miss these characters now that I’m finished reading the book.
“Maybe this isn’t how life works. Maybe it’s all about people coming into your life for a little while and you take what they give you and use it on your next friendship or relationship. And if you’re lucky, maybe some people pop back in after you thought they were gone for good.” – What If It’s Us
I loved that this book was set in NYC because like Arthur, I’ll be spending the summer there for an internship starting in June. So, it was even more interesting for me to read about all of the different places they go in the city, from both the perspective of a tourist and a New Yorker.
What If It’s Us is a YA romcom for sure, and like all the best romcoms it isn’t just a story about two people falling in love. It’s about love and relationships, particularly learning how to navigate your first or second romantic relationship while balancing life, school, and friends. I liked how Ben and Arthur are always communicating and trying to make their relationship work in healthy ways that respect both of their needs. Sometimes they get it wrong (and when they do, it can be quite amusing), but they keep trying!
My one complaint that isn’t really a complaint is the ending. I can’t spoil it, but all I’ll say is I wanted more. I’m praying Albertalli and Silvera decide to write a sequel… a companion, anything. I just need more, okay? More of Ben and Arthur’s adorable, awkward interactions and romance. More of Ethan, Jessie, Dylan, and Samantha. MORE.
Rating: 4/5 Stars
P.S. What If It’s Us has been optioned for film, as Adam Silvera announced on Twitter. Can’t wait to see the adaptation!
Is What If It’s Us on your TBR? If you’ve read it, what did you think?
